Ultrasound Teaching Rural Armenia

The purpose of this project is to introduce emergency ultrasonography to rural villages in Armenia. This renewable and low-cost medical technology will allow rural physicians to rapidly diagnose emergent medical conditions and assist them to carry out timely therapeutic interventions.
We are a group of two physicians (Dr Raphael Vartazarmian and Dr Diran Arslanian) who will be travelling to Armenia this October to teach a one-week ultrasound course to physicians and medical residents who practice in rural areas and in and around Yerevan. This project is in collaboration with COAF (Children of Armenia Fund) and AMAQ (Armenian Medical Association of Quebec).
We are launching this GoFundMe campaign in order to raise $20 000 to buy two portable ultrasound machines that we will leave in Armenia under the supervision of the COAF foundation. This medical equipment will allow physicians in Armenia to acquire and improve their skills and to teach the ultrasound course to other physicians after our departure. We plan to return to Armenia and follow up on the project frequently and will continue to provide support and ultrasound machines as needed in the future.
Ultrasonography is an important skill for all emergency and family physicians as it can detect multiple life threatening diseases in an easy and non-invasive way. Recent innovations in technology have made it possible for these machines to be handheld and portable. This will allow doctors in rural areas, who usually go from village to village, to carry this machine in their bag very conveniently. We believe that by spreading the use of ultrasound in rural Armenia, death from treatable conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, aortic abdominal aneurysm (AAA), pericardial tamponnade, etc. will be greatly reduced.

Le but de notre projet est d'introduire l'échographie d'urgence au chevet en région rurale d'Arménie. Cette technologie innovatrice à faible coût servira aux médecins de régions éloignées à diagnostiquer rapidement et initier un traitement pour plusieurs pathologies potentiellement mortelles.
Nous sommes un group de deux médecins (Dr Raphael Vartazarmian et Dr Diran Arslanian) qui voyagerons en Arménie cet automne afin d'enseigner des techniques d'échographie au chevet pour des médecins en milieux ruraux et résidents en médecine à Yerevan et aux alentours. Ce projet sera en collaboration avec les organismes COAF (Children of Armenia Fund) et AMAQ (Association Médicale Arménienne du Québec).
Nous lançons cette campagne GoFundMe afin de ramasser 20 000$ pour acheter deux machines d'échographie portatives que nous laisserons à COAF afin qu'ils puissent parfaire leurs connaissances et répandre l'utilisation de l'échographie chez davantage de médecins ruraux après notre départ. Nous comptons revenir fréquemment en Arménie pour assurer un suivi étroit et de la formation additionnelle.
L'échographie au chevet est un outil indispensable pour tout médecin d'urgence et médecin de famille oeuvrant en région isolée. Il sert, entre autres, à détecter rapidement et de manière non-invasive plusieurs pathologies potentiellement mortelles et réversibles telles que la grossesse ectopique, l'anévrysme de l'aorte abdominale (AAA) et la tamponnade cardiaque. Nous croyons qu'en formant le plus grand nombre de médecin possible, le taux de décès de ces pathologies sera réduit, vu leur détection précoce. Les avancées technologiques récentes permettent aux médecins de se promener d'une région à l'autre avec leur propre machine d'échographie portative.
