Dementia is a cruel disease that has devastated the lives of some of my closest family members and friends. My wife and I both lost our grandmothers to dementia in recent years. We and our families felt helpless as we saw them robbed of their memories, their sense of humour, their personality - everything that made them who they are.
It's tragic to think that 472,000 Australians currently live with dementia. 250 people are diagnosed everyday. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia.
On 6 March 2021, I will be attempting to finish the 101km Gone Nuts Adventure Run in Tasmania. In doing so, I will be raising money for Dementia Australia. The organisation supports those impacted by dementia by providing information, education and support services. They also advocate for much needed policy change and research.
Whilst I will no doubt experience some pain and suffering on my ultramarathon journey, I know I'll be able draw inspiration from those who have endured far more than me.
Thank you for your kind support!
