Emergency Medical Bills

Hi, my name is Hilarie, and I am fundraising to help my brother Phil ("Andy") with an emergency situation. Last year he was diagnosed with heart failure and had to leave his job due to his heart functioning at only 20%. He stayed in the hospital for 5 days amounting to $60,000, and had to buy a defibrillator vest for over $2000 among other things. Although he was able to talk some of these numbers down, they were still far too much. After being forced to leave his job, he lost his health insurance. He applied for Medicaid but makes $200 too much a month to qualify, so he has had to purchase health insurance, which is also hugely expensive due to pre-existing conditions. He has been stretching his disability out and doing a really good job of keeping his head above water, but another medical bill came in that he had to pay, and now he will not make rent this month and is facing eviction. Andy has been in the workforce since he was 18. He has been working in and managing warehouses all of his life. He has rarely missed a day, has always loved working, and has taken pride in what he does. All of this has been extremely distressing and depressing for him, as he has always managed to look after himself.

The American healthcare system is so broken, not to mention the lack of a social safety net. It's extremely disheartening to hear of these stories time and again, but this time it hits my family. My brother and sister are all the family I have left and I really want to help him get through this and get on his feet. Nobody deserves to live in fear and face homelessness because they got sick. And I love my brother very much and want him to be ok.

If we raise this money (approximately $2000 USD) he will pay rent, back rent, and some of the more recent medical bills to get him caught up again.
