UKRAINIAN BLAST VICTIMS NEED YOUR HELP TO WALK AGAIN

In a world with too many bystanders — BE ONE OF THE HELPERS AND HEALERS

For the majority of my 81 years, I have studied, taught, and written about war and the wounds it inflicts, wounds to the body and wounds to the soul. Apart from the college and university classrooms where I taught for over fifty years, I have mostly worked with veterans and veterans organizations, in the U.S., Northern Ireland, South Africa and, in recent years, Ukraine. My appeal to you today is on behalf of the veterans of Ukraine, which is to say all the war-ravaged men, women, and children of Ukraine, who are all veterans of the merciless, unprovoked war-storm beating down on them from Russia. More specifically, the focus of my appeal to you are those soldiers and civilians who have suffered the most catastrophic injuries in the war, requiring the world-class trauma care and bionic prosthetics provided by the Superhumans Center in Lviv, the largest city in Western Ukraine. Since opening its doors in Spring 2023, the Superhumans Center has offered prosthetics, rehabilitation, psychological support, reconstructive surgery, hearing loss treatment, and more to civilian and military victims of the war, all free of charge. Not surprisingly, the demand for all of these services, however, far exceeds current resources; so the creation of five new satellite Superhumans Centers is underway across Ukraine. The need for these centers will long outlive the war, because no war is ever over when it ends, as war wounds take immeasurably more time to heal than to inflict.

Over 70% of war casualties in Ukraine involve major limb injuries, many of which require multiple amputations, often above the knee or elbow. Of these, 80% are caused by a lethal array of explosives—bombs, missiles, landmines, artillery shells, and IEDs. Of these demonic devices, the 2 million landmines, with which Russia has carpeted Ukraine, are the most lasting scourge, because long after war ends and bombs stop falling, landmines keep on killing. The HALO Trust has labeled this "the biggest explosives problem of the 21st century!" According to them, Ukraine is the most heavily mined country in the world, with 40% of its land—an area the size of the U.K. or the State of Florida. This means that the mission and work of the Superhumans centers will be critically important for many years to come. This is why I am asking you now to join me in helping them. The people of Ukraine have been bludgeoned by Russia and betrayed by our government, accusing them of "having started the war" and "having brought it on themselves." Let's let them know that we stand with them.

Please give whatever you can. NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL and PLEASE SHARE THIS APPEAL FAR AND WIDE ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
