As you know, over 500,000 Ukrainians have already fled their country, principally to Poland, with another 4 million refugees expected in the coming weeks. Just like you, I want to help in a way that is meaningful and trustworthy. That is why I got on the phone with my friends from France this weekend. Those of you who know me know that I moved here from France just a few years ago and return often. My close friends, Jean-Marc and Remy are both planning to help with this current crisis.
Remy and his wife Asia are Polish. They live in France and have family and friends in Poland. He is in contact with a church in Przemysl, at the Polish-Ukrainian border, which acts as a "first responder" - meaning that they welcome refugees who cross the border and host them in the church building for one or two days until they are taken in charge by other organizations and sent to other European cities. First-aid supplies are generally available, but there is a lack of some specific supplies. Remy and Asia are packing a vehicle with a list of items in need and will drive from Luxembourg to Przemysl on Monday 3/7. We are launching a crowd-funding campaign to raise money for this project.
Jean-Marc is the other friend I called. He has been going to Romania for years assisting an orphanage in Brosteni, near the Ukrainian border. I have accompanied him on some of these trips and know the leaders there well. They are preparing to assist the current influx of refugees - with limited means as the region has much higher poverty levels than Poland. If you would like to help with this Romania project with a US tax-deductible donation using Paypal please click and indicate "Help for Ukraine". Jean-Marc and a few other drivers will leave for Brosteni with nonperishable food, hygiene items, and sleeping bags collected in France and Luxembourg. They will probably have to rent a larger truck because of the volume of the packages to transport.
We have known Remy, Jean-Marc, and their wives for over 30 years. We have worked together on several humanitarian projects. The direct reports we get from the Ukrainian border indicate that in spite of the presence of thousands of volunteers and dozens of relief organizations, the needs are still immense.
100% of your donations will go directly to the support of Ukrainians, not to any travel costs - except one truck rental.
Would you consider giving something toward this campaign and helping Ukrainian refugees?
