Uke Can Make a Difference with LivBit

Hi, I’m Liv, the creator of LivBits. I’m a reader, thinker, and kid voice believer. Maybe some of you know my LivBit work and my LOVE of books and reading. Well, I also LOVE music. Last Christmas, I received a ukulele, and I’ve spent the last year teaching myself how to play. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’ve loved learning a new instrument. I feel grateful I have another way to express myself, and another reason to connect and learn from other people who love books and music too.


I think it’s important for kids to have lots of ways to show their thinking. Maybe for some kids it’s by making videos, like I make. For others, it might be writing their thinking out in a story. Or it might be singing a tune on a ukulele!


Recently, I had the honor of visiting a school in Ohio for my LivBit work. This school is special to me for loads of reasons and especially because of their music and ukulele program which is cherished by the students. Unfortunately, this school is 100% free breakfast and lunch for all students and lacks the funds to keep the ukuleles for an entire year. Kids at this school only use the ukuleles for a few months, then need to pass them on to the other schools in the district.


During my visit, this school gave me a gift I will never forget. After my LivBit keynote, they surprised me by singing my favorite song, “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman. I will never, ever forget the special feeling of having 500 voices singing those lyrics to me. The only thing missing was the kids playing their ukuleles! I am so grateful to them for giving me such an unforgettable gift.


Now it’s my turn to give back to them! My goal is to help this school get a set of 25 ukuleles for its music program -- ukuleles they could keep and learn to play for the entire year. One ukulele costs $120. when you add in shipping, so I need to raise $3,000. Anything over my goal will help me purchase music books for the ukuleles.


The kids at this school LOVE my LivBit work, and I want to show them, how passions can lead you to helping others in small and big ways; your donation can help me show them this. They have an incredible music teacher, who creates meaningful opportunities for kids to experience the power of music, even though she has to share her learning space in the library due to overcrowding at the school. It was HER idea to give me the gift of a song at my school visit!

 

This gift might seem like it’s for one school, but it is really for the ENTIRE Ohio community where this school is located. By purchasing this school its own set of ukuleles, the other schools will have the existing ukuleles for longer. It will benefit the students and their families, and I am certain the schools will perform to many people. Because we helped them, we can be a small part of their joyful music for the world.


And, shhhhhh! I am planning to SURPRISE this school with this gift right after the holidays if I am able to meet my goal. I am so hopeful you can help me with this dream to give music to Ohio!
