We are sisters from Galway, Mary and Éilís Conroy, who are passionate about mental health. We have embarked on a journey to raise funds for Jigsaw. Jigsaw is a non-profit mental health service which helps young people overcome problems such as anxiety and depression. Every year over three quarters of a million people die by suicide, to put that in perspective that’s 1 person every 40 seconds.
In order to raise funds for Jigsaw and to help young people in this challenging time, we are embarking on a mission to climb the tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. The climb is approximately 62 kilometres. This will take 7 days and 6 nights camping on the mountain.
The Covid-19 virus ushered in a wave of darkness for many people, leaving them isolated, alone, and suffering. We hope, that through raising vital funds we can help Jigsaw to shine a light on this darkness and help people overcome their Mental Health battles.
Since Jigsaw was set up, it has provided support and information to 150,000 people. Through this challenge we want to help them on their mission to tackle the silent suffering experienced by so many. Jigsaw offers a free walk-in service to young people who otherwise would have to wait up to three years for the help that they need.
In unprecedented times, COVID-19 has had its toll on charities all over the world. While charities, like Jigsaw, are unable to raise funds that they would usually receive from fundraisers and organised events, the mental health of our nation suffers due to isolation, sickness, and the death of loved ones. Now, more than ever, mental health support is needed.
As we tackle this challenge and prepare for Kilimanjaro, we want to represent the young people who have their own mountains to climb and show that no matter who you are, you can get help, and you are not alone.
