UK 758 : St Vincent Appeal
On the 9 April the La Soufriere volcano erupted on the Caribbean island of St Vincent. The eruption has covered over 40% of the Islands with blankets of thick volcanic ash, which has caused the emergency evacuation of up to a third of the Islands population from their homes. At least a third of the Island’s agriculture has been destroyed, with Government estimates that the Island stands to lose half of its economy/GDP for the year.
Although, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has down graded the volcanic alert level from red to orange, in recent weeks matters have been compounded by heavy rains and flooding, which have further damaged infrastructure and increased risks to lives.
We are now better placed to understand the scale of devastation caused to communities - villages, schools and families, and of the best ways in which we can help the people of St Vincent.
UK 758, is a collective of St Lucian groups and individuals from across the UK, who have come together to combine our interest in doing what we can to help the people of St Vincent. Our aim is to raise goods and funds that can contribute to supporting families in St Vincent. We have resolved to focus our efforts on specific village and schools on the Island with whom we will work directly to assist.
We are working closely with the advice of the St Vincent High Commission in London, and the Office of the St Lucia Ambassador for the Diaspora.
