As “Friends of Kenny Wenstrom” we wanted to share some challenging news. Over the past year, Kenny has been battling a highly aggressive form of salivary gland cancer with an initial diagnosis in August 2021.
Kenny noticed persistent swelling in his neck, which was thought to result from a tooth infection. Once the tooth was removed and he started antibiotics, it was expected that the swelling would resolve, but it did not. So Kenny went for a CT scan and biopsy, which confirmed the worst, a high-grade carcinoma in the right submandibular gland.
Kenny endured three months of induction chemo followed by seven weeks of daily chemo/radiation, but by early spring, scans confirmed that the chemo cocktail was not successful.
On August 8th, 2022, Kenny headed into a 15-hour surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital to finally remove this cancerous tumor that had wreaked havoc on his life. The amazing doctors worked simultaneously to remove the cancer and repair Kenny’s face. The surgery involved removing bones, muscle and skin from his shoulder to reconstruct Kenny’s jaw. After 25 days in the hospital and two stints in the ICU Kenny was finally released on September 1st.
The oncology news looks good, and the surgeons are hopeful that they removed all of the tumor but recovery will be long and hard for Kenny.
Any donation you can provide will help ease the Wenstroms’ financial burden of medical bills and living expenses as Kenny recuperates. He is not one to ask for help, but we know many of you who love, care and want to help support Kenny, Debbie, Julia, Justin and Nick as Kenny recuperates. Your donations are truly appreciated!
