Hello everyone,
The reason for this fundraiser is to help with expenses so that my husband Joseph can get critically needed medical care.
Joseph was recently diagnosed with a rare condition called Tarlov Cysts. After two frustrating and frightening years of severely worsening symptoms, many tests and appointments with multiple doctors including neurologists and neurosurgeons, all of which ended up being inconclusive and provided no reason nor diagnosis for his symptoms, finally a spine doctor recently ordered an MRI that looked at the lower spine and the Tarlov Cysts were diagnosed.
Since the onset of this illness, Joseph has become more and more disabled, experiencing a wide range of debilitating symptoms, including dizziness and a severe gait disorder and balance issues to where he can barely walk without falling. Left untreated, Tarlov Cysts can cause nerve and organ damage. This condition is so rare that there are currently only two doctors in the entire country who have experience in treating Tarlov Cysts, and who are taking new patients. Fortunately we finally had an initial phone consultation with one of these doctors, who is located in California. We have an appointment scheduled with him for February 15th, and surgery scheduled for February 19th.
We live in Virginia and as Joseph has been unable to work for quite some time due to his health, and as I also have multiple health problems and have been on disability for several years, we have set up this fundraiser to help with the travel and accommodation expenses, both for the initial surgery, and then for the follow up visit 3-4 months later.
In terms of medical expenses, there is a Charity Care division of the medical foundation in California that we believe and hope will cover the hospital, doctor, etc. We expect to have confirmation on this soon.
We are hopeful that he will get treatment in time to reverse the symptoms and prevent serious damage. As he is already having very serious issues with his bladder and bowels, there is some concern that damage may have already occurred. Joseph also has been experiencing severe lower back pain, middle back pain and neck issues, and his right leg won't move at times.
We have a strong faith in God, and always try to help others. Those who know Joseph know that he is very brave and strong and even though he is so ill, even in his current condition, if someone came to us for help we would find a way to help. He keeps reassuring me that others will help us now in this time of dire need and to trust in my faith in God.
