Uisce For Tanzania

UISCE FOR TANZANIA IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING WATER TO VILLAGERS IN RURAL TANZANIA, WHERE THE NEED IS GREATEST.

Uisce for Tanzania came about by our group’s willingness to support Jim Kavanagh in his efforts to supply clean water to villages in rural Tanzania. The organisation is focused on bringing water to thousands of people in need of a fresh water supply. The people in many rural communities share their only water source with domestic and wild animals.

Jim has a long history in the region and throughout East Africa. He has been occupied in water supply, sanitation and other related activities in Refugee Camps and villages. Jim has been providing services to communities, supported by local Catholic Clergy and driven by them, in cooperation with these communities.

OUR PROJECTS

Our group visited many areas over ten days in March 2023. We identified the following village as a starting point for the Trust’s next work, located in the MBULU region where we will have assistance from the local community and the Catholic Diocese of Mbulu.

Harbanghet village is one among three villages including Masqaroda and Garibabi which are from Masqaroda Village in Mbulu District.
Harbanghet village comprises 6 sub-villages with about 5000 inhabitants in about 700 households.

The picture below shows one of two sources of water, which this village relies on.

The second available source is shared with their animals.

Our project will source clean water from a spring, which has been located and after installing a pump, powered by Solar Panels, the water will be piped to
tanks installed on a hill-top and then piped down to the Harbanghet village, which comprises six sub-villages.

This project will have a cost of about €40,000.

Further projects will follow for the other two villages, Masquaroda and Garibabi. For those villages, Jim Kavanagh has identified sources of water that can be harnessed and can supply clean water for the villagers. He will assess these further while working on the first project above.

These three projects will have a combined cost of about €100,000 and can be completed in 2024.

Your donations meant that UISCE FOR TANZANIA (UFT) provided 2,500 villagers and their farm animals with a permanent water supply in 2023.

This project was a great success. Jim Kavanagh was on site for the duration of the project, arranging the purchase of materials and organising the local men who willingly dug trenches for water pipes, carted materials over difficult land, doing all without payment. The knowledge that they were helping their own community was sufficient reward.

Your donations have meant that this community in the Mbulu District of North Western Tanzania now has life-long water at a cost of about €14 per person.

Your money has been well used.

2024 will see UFT back in the Mbulu District, where a similar project has already been identified. This time the water supply has been found and once harnessed it will serve a rural community numbering up on 3000 people, including a school of 600 pupils and a clinic used mainly by the Mothers and Children of the area.

This project will also require money to be raised in Ireland. Thanks to your generosity in 2023 we have some funds in place but this will need to be topped up in the next few months.
