KENDRA’S FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

​No one is ever prepared to hear the words “you have cancer” but my friend Kendra heard those words just a couple of weeks before one of the most dreamed about days of her life…her wedding day.

​Everyone who has ever heard those words know that once spoken you lose all your senses, your mind races, you aren’t aware of your surroundings, and you don’t hear another word that your doctor is saying…your life flashes before you and devastation sets in.

​After receiving much love and support from her fiancé Mikey as well as friends and family Kendra has begun her fight against this disease known all too well to so very many of us.

​

​Kendra’s treatment will begin with an initial 4–6-hour surgery to perform a double mastectomy including extracting a sample of surrounding lymph node cells and tissue for diagnostic examination and further evaluation of BRCA mutation genetic factors which will provide her and her medical team all the medical factors needed for them to put the best treatment plan into place based on the pathology findings. At present, Kendra’s treatment following this surgery is to undergo chemotherapy treatment, as well as daily hormone therapy with the end goal of having reconstruction surgery in a few months all of which is pending the outcome of the pathology results.

​Having just started a new job in September and not having paid leave, we all want Kendra to be able to focus on her treatment and recovery without the stress of financial worries for monthly living expenses as well as out-of-pocket medical care for surgeries, co-pays, chemotherapy costs, associated prescribed medicines as well as any additional treatment that she may require. The financial burden that comes with this diagnosis weighs heavily on Kendra’s shoulders as it does most individuals in this position when their only focus should be treatment, self-care, and recovery.

​Kendra is a loving wife; (yes Kendra & Mikey said, “I DO” and choose to “NOT LET CANCER” interfere with the love and commitment they share) mother, stepmother, daughter, friend, and co-worker who has shown great strength and concern for all those around her. If you know Kendra, then you know of her love for all children and how she always has an extra one or two for the day or even for an overnight!

​It’s now our turn to show Kendra all our love, support, and strength and be there for her as she lets cancer know that it is messing with the wrong girl!
