Life is not fair. We go through our days knowing our time here is temporary. But as parents, we never expect to outlive our children.
On Tuesday, September 22nd, Irwindale Police Department Sergeant Rene Sapien lost his oldest son Michael Sapien, months after losing his wife and the mother of his two boys, Kim Sapien. Michael's passing was sudden, unexpected and surreal.
We as parents can all relate. We raise our children and envision them doing great things when they grow up. We look forward to their first steps, their first day of school, their first crush, and so on. Things we always envision. Regardless of who they grow up to become, they will always be our baby. But death before our own time is never envisioned.
We can only take solace with knowing Michael is now with his mother. If you went to Kim's funeral, you know full well that Michael's words resonated with everyone. We all knew the deep love, bond and affection he had towards his mother. As he spoke to those who gathered to celebrate Kim on that day, we knew how much of an impact she made in his life. Rest In Peace to you Michael. I hope that you are with your mother as I'm typing this.
I am asking donations on behalf of the Sapien family to assist in funeral costs. The GoFundMe account for Kim was such a huge outpour of support and love that Rene will always remember. He was amazed by the compassion he had from his family, friends and people he didn't even know. He mentioned to me that he's "embarrassed to ask" again. So I'm asking for him. Only request he asks, is that all respect the Sapien Family's privacy as they cope with the pain of Michael's loss. He is receiving everyone's text/voicemails etc., and thanks everyone for the kind words, support and love. He apologizes if he has not responded.
May God bless the Sapien Family, and thank you.
