Amanda’s medical recovery

Almost 2 weeks ago our lives were rocked. After work Amanda was heading to pick up her two children from school when a tow truck tried to beat her through a light when she had the right away and slammed right into her driver door. FHP says the driver never tapped the breaks. He hit her with such force it ripped her door off, spun her car around at least 5 times and pushed her car over the sidewalk by cvs. Still 2 weeks later you can still see the dirt pushed back where the car landed. The pictures of her car is how the firefighters found it. It is truly a miracle she is still with us. She was transported to Lawnwood hospital in Fort Pierce where the trauma drs & nurses told us repeatedly how lucky she is to be alive and although that she was in a severe pain from her injuries, she remained calm while talking to them. Amanda’s left arm was completely mangled & shattered, along with bones in her face. After 5 surgeries on her arm and face, Amanda was finally released from the hospital after a week in the trauma unit with an X fix (I could be using the wrong word) on her arm for the next 6 weeks. Her injuries from the accident have resulted in her having multiple metal plates in her face and arm for the rest of her life. Amanda now has weekly appointments for over a month in Palm Beach for her face & weekly appointments for her arm in Fort Pierce for the next 6 weeks. Which then leads into an overnight night stay at Lawnwood for yet another surgery under anesthesia to have the X fix removed & her arm into another brace before she can hopefully start her 6 months of physical therapy. To say Amanda is on a long road to recovery is the least of it. Due to the severity of her injuries, she will be out of work for 6 months.

If you know Amanda you know she is a very private person and NEVER wants to ask for help. She is the one who always wants to help others but never asks it for herself. While she was in the hospital & someone mentioned a go fund me she shot it down instantly. But like usual when it rains it pours and while Amanda was in the hospital we found out the tow truck driver was uninsured. Luckily Amanda’s car and health insurance is covering some of the bills. As adults we know how quickly expenses add up with no work for 6 months, weekly follow up appointments for months, another overnight hospital stay, physical therapy and still parenting 2 young children.

As her big sister, it absolutely crushed me to see her on that hospital bed in so much pain. I’m extremely grateful she is alive but it also breaks me to watch her stress over things that are not her fault. While Donald has been a rock through all of this, it’s a lot of expenses for one person to carry, especially with two young children. Donald is having to take on the responsibilities of both parents now and also trying to be there for Amanda as much as he can which may also result in some days off work. All their lives were flipped upside down when an uninsured tow trucker driver decided rushing to his location was more important than Amanda’s life. I know the holidays are approaching quickly & everyone is prepping for that but if you are able to donate at all it is greatly appreciated!

Amanda is my sister, my best friend and as much as I know she hates asking for help, she needs it right now. So as her big sister I’ll do it for her. In this type of situation every little bit helps.
