Uganda Education Matters
Donation protected
Hi my name is Angel, I am a 6th-year concurrent education student at Brock University. I have always placed education as a top priority of mine growing up. Now, as a soon-to-be fully certified teacher, my educational values remain the same in that every child deserves an education. To me, education extends far beyond academics. It entails teaching to the whole student to foster their emotional, social, spiritual, physical, and intellectual development equipping them with the skills to make decisions and reflect on their views in comparison to others. This is something I strongly believe in and has led me to my upcoming volunteer experience in Uganda with the Amazing Love Organization (ALDO) beginning on July 2nd.
ALDO emphasizes holistic education and instilling positive and healthy social and academic opportunities through hands-on learning experiences for their students. However, a lack of resources often creates a barrier to providing quality education for many children. My mission is to help make a difference by supporting all students to receive the quality education that they deserve. On average these students are 5 years behind in literacy compared to other regions of Uganda. With English being the children's second language, I wish to provide them with visuals and concrete materials to help develop their skills and become engaged in their learning. When students are engaged; they want to learn, they are more likely to succeed and they can better synthesize information. Although my time in Uganda at ALDO will be short, I strive to inspire students to continue learning which would be made possible with appropriate resources and supports that they can use once I leave.
Considering that luggage space is limited and the majority of my allocated space for donations is full with supplies for the school, I am reaching out for monetary donations of any amount that will all be used to purchase school supplies (eg: pencils, stickers, backpacks, pencil sharpeners, books, protractor sets etc.), along with personal items (eg: DIVA cups, clothing, shoes, upkeep supplies etc.). All remaining donations will be given to ALDO to support the school community in the following areas…
- Construction (cement $20/bag, solar panels $7,681, a classroom $10,000). Solar energy is their only source of electricity.
- Education (desk $40, supplies per term $1,500)
- Student (uniform $30, pair of shoes $30, porridge $60/year, supplies $60)
- Teacher (5 textbooks $80, bicycle $150, planning books $500, salary $200/month)
This list encompasses a brief synopsis of the expenses each family and staff member have to contribute to access to education and a living. “Education is a powerful ‘vaccine’ against poverty, disease, and ignorance. Together we can provide a gift of education to empower communities.” Every child, family, and community matters - together we can make a difference.
Any amount is so greatly appreciated and will help support the students and teachers at ALDO in their educational journeys.
