Our oldest son Griffin (on the right in the photo above, with dad Brian and brother Ronan) has Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a progressive muscle-wasting disease that will slowly rob him of his ability to run, jump, walk, breathe and, eventually, to have a heart that beats (the heart is a muscle too). Currently there is no effective treatment for DMD. People with this disease often do not survive into adulthood, and those that do are severely handicapped. However, for the first time ever, a veritable cornucopia of drugs to treat this disease are currently in clinical trials and earlier stages of research. Some of these drugs are being shown to significantly slow the course of the disease. Seeing children with DMD in clinical trials jumping and running normally at 9 or 10, walking far into their teen years, is nothing short of miraculous. The drugs work. A cure is coming, but it isn't coming fast enough. In order to bring these treatments to fruition, this promising research must be completed, and the resulting drugs need to be brought to market. Research is expensive. Getting drugs to market is expensive. The biggest hurdle standing between children with DMD and a cure is funding.

In honor of the kids with DMD who have more and more difficulty walking, Griffin's dad Brian will be taking his own long, difficult walk. In October, he will be traveling to Nepal with other parents and compassionate friends of those with DMD and trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest. All of the proceeds of this epic journey will be donated to the most promising research. The first $1,000 Brian raises will go directly to the Hope for Gus foundation , which will choose one very promising therapy to fund through the Duchenne Alliance .

Please help to end this devastating disease that afflicts our little boy and thousands of others. Please give generously if you are able, as I promise that not a single dollar of your donation will be wasted. But if you can only give $5 or $10....that amount is just as important and appreciated to get us to our goal. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts....and, with your help, from the top of the world!
