This spring, the University of Florida’s Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will attend and compete at the annual ASCE Southeast Regional Conference, the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, and the National Concrete Canoe Competition.
The Southeast Regional Conference will be held March 16-18, 2017 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. UF ASCE is bringing over 50 students to this competition to compete in an array of civil engineering disciplines. Along with the nationally recognized Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, the Southeast Region also holds “regional competitions” which include but are not limited to plans reading, surveying, and professional paper. These competitions teach ASCE members valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork while gaining practical skills that are applicable to their future careers.
This year our chapter needs to raise at least $3,000 in order to compete at the ASCE Southeast Regional Conference, the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, and the National Concrete Canoe Competition. Students attending the conferences are required to pay a fee, participate in community service events sponsored by ASCE, and volunteer at fundraising events throughout the year. However, the cost of materials used for these competitions along with registration fees, hotel accommodations, and travel expenses cannot be offset by the students’ hard work alone.
