Please keep Kathy Bermudez and her family in your prayers as she begins her cancer battle. She has been diagnosed with inoperable squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharyngeal region. It is locatedly at the base of the tongue. It was also found in 2 lymphnodes.
Kathy will be starting chemotherapy and radiation therapy to run concurrently. We do not know an exact date yet when treatment will begin, but it will be within the next two weeks. The treatment will be very aggressive, and she will lose her hair and have a feeding tube.
It's going to be a long, tough journey for Kathy and her family. She is going to have to lean on others for help for once, instead of her normal role as nurturer for everyone else. She has been a great friend and given selflessly of herself to many of us when we've gone through our own trials and tribulations. Now, although very unfortunate, we will have the honor of being there to help her for once.
We are starting this Go Fund Me account to help her and her family with medical bills and other expenses. We are not sure how much longer she will be able to work or how much time Jesse will have to take off to help her. Hopefully, she will qualify for short-term disability. However, it has a 2 week waiting period and will only pay a portion of her salary.
I know Kathy has helped each one of us at some point: maybe it was a kind word or a shoulder to lean on, maybe by feeding us with one of her famous homecooked meals, or buying us Christmas gifts when we were in need, or by helping us to furnish our new place, or organizing a fundraiser to raise money for our own cancer diagnosis, collecting money from coworkers when we needed help. I could go on and on. . . Kathy is one of the most generous people I know, and she would (and has) given the shirt off her own back. She is a loving wife and mother and a wonderful friend and coworker who treats everyone like family.
