Support For Sherry

My name is Sarah Wilson and on May 3rd 2024 I received a phone call at 5:55am from my life long best friend, Sherry Loucks. I knew something was wrong. Sherry gathered the breath and strength to tell me that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastasized Ovarian Cancer.

Sherry went into OSMH on the evening of May 2nd with severe stomach pains. The pains had forced her to take off the previous 4 days from work; a place where Sherry calls her home. Sherry doesn’t miss time. If she wasn’t in the building, her mind certainly was. Her children have all become young adults spread over Canada, East to West, and she has finally started to focus on herself. With this time, she wanted to commit to a job she loved, maintain her strong friendships, building on her strong individual loving relationships with her 4 children. Travel. Build on her Faith. Take up the piano! She was thriving and happy and I was happy for her. Never did we anticipate hearing those awful devastating words of diagnosis and that cancer was quickly spreading throughout her body.

Sherry has undergone so many CT Scans, Ultrasounds, x rays, draining of fluids (which she will describe as the worst pain a human can endure). She was a patient at OSMH for 11 days then released home on the 12th of May, only to find herself back admitted to RVH Barrie a short 48 hours later. Controlling her pain was the best the Doctors could provide until the chemotherapy could start. Sherry has an intense treatment plan spanning over the next 10-12 weeks. She received her first 6 hour chemo treatment May 23rd, 2 more sessions will follow. If - WHEN - these treatments are received well by Sherry, her Oncology Team will proceed with removal surgery to take out the tumours and masses that have made camp on both her ovaries, her pelvic floor, Omentum, abdominal areas and lungs. The fluid build-up in the abdomen and fluid/blood on her lungs have started to put pressure on Sherry’s heart. Sherry’s new home is currently OSMH in Orillia where the Doctors are continuously draining fluids, controlling her pain and maintaining a safe level of oxygen. She is being closely monitored.

The past 4 weeks have been such a whirlwind of sadness, frustration, confusion and defeat. But no one is as strong as my best friend Sherry! Her determination to remain strong, to not allow any negative mental pressure penetrate through her shield of titanium is remarkable. Her son, Cody flew in immediately from Halifax and her son Kyler from Calgary to be by Mama’s side all hours of the day. Madison and Austin are doing the same from Muskoka. At any given time of the day, one of her children is at her side.

Sherry is not a person to ask for anything, if you know her then you know that even trying to pay for dinner won’t be allowed. Her heart is massive and she loves strong with all she's got. Always. All ways.

I wanted to put her story out to the community and ask for any support to help with all the financial burdens Sherry is facing while not being able to work. She had planned to move to Barrie June 1st already, which turns out will be closer and easier for treatments. Let’s all pull together and help Sherry keep all her focus and hope into her recovery!

Much appreciated for all the support.
