This week, my brother Ryan was riding a Lime scooter in a bike lane when someone opened their car door into him, knocking him off and breaking his knee. He was one block away from his work, where he’s a daycare teacher. Ryan relies on his bicycle to commute to work, to babysit, and in general as his transportation. The day of the accident it was raining in the morning, so he took the bus to work instead of biking. During his lunch break, he took a Lime scooter to get lunch when he was hit by a car door.
This is an all-too-common crash called “dooring” that happens when drivers don’t check oncoming traffic before opening their door.
His injury — a tibial plateau fracture — can be pretty life-altering, but what we know for now is that he won’t be able to get around normally for at least 3 months. He is still being assessed for surgery and will be out of work for weeks as he heals. His job as a daycare teacher is physically demanding and he won’t be able to return until he is at least partially weight bearing. Because the fracture is in his joint, he will likely develop arthritis and have longterm stiffness, he will be experiencing some kind of aftermath for the rest of his life.
Riders of bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters have rights to the road as any motor vehicle does. This is a painful reminder that driver’s negligences can have life altering consequences. Please share the road responsibly, check your mirrors, and protect our streets most vulnerable commuters. Any money you can donate will help Ryan cover the cost of rent, mobility devices, and transportation while in recovery.
