At the age of 42 years young, after struggling with excruciating back pain for several months (due to seven (yes, 7...) spinal fractures), Wendy's entire world was turned upside down on May 1st, when she was diagnosed with cancer (Multiple Myeloma) of her spine, hip and most recently, a lymph node in her abdomen.
While there is no cure for Multiple Myeloma (yet), this cancer can often be managed successfully in many people for years. Successful management involves radiation therapy and a combination of injectable and oral chemotherapy. Wendy has already undergone radiation therapy and has started the injectable and oral chemotherapy treatments. The oral chemotherapy alone costs approximately $8,000 to 10,000 per month! Despite applying for regular grants to have the cost of this medication covered, Wendy's bills are already over $12,000 and climbing daily.
Having been without a parental figure since she was fifteen years old, Wendy's first thoughts upon hearing her cancer diagnosis were immediately of her two children, Destiny (20) and Elijah (18). She didn't want her children growing up without a Mother, as she had done. At that very moment, Wendy chose to fight and she has continued to fight every single day since. Through it all, she has remained the positive, silly, charismatic person we all love so much!
In addition to being a single mother to her beloved children, Wendy is a devoted pet parent to her many fur babies, a cherished friend, loving sister, a rockstar Office Manager and compassionate Veterinary Technician.
Wendy has said that her cancer diagnosis has not made her weaker -- it's actually made her stronger. She says a fire has been lit inside of her to become an even more fierce advocate for those who do not have a voice - both human and animal alike. She is already busy working on a position within her veterinary hospital, aimed at providing a better support system for elderly clients, to help them receive more assistance when it comes to following and executing advanced treatment plans for their pets.
Just as Wendy spends her life being an advocate for the voiceless, we are making it our mission to help her now. Please help us to lessen the financial burden for Wendy, in the same way she would do for us if the roles were reversed, so she can focus on what's most important -- fighting (and beating!) this cancer.
