I would like to introduce you to REX. Some of you may have read about Rex through my Facebook posts. Rex is 94 years old! He is amazing, smart, sharp and funny.
Rex is a WWII Army Vet. He went in as a private and came out a sergeant. He doesn't like to talk about it much as he told me what's done is done. But he did tell me with pride in his voice and a tear in his eye that he came back with many more men than he lost. He even tried to re-up for Vietnam to serve his country once again, but since he was in his 30's he was told he was too old.
Rex made his living as a large equipment operator. He does have medical insurance through the VA. He currently lives in Alviso. He lived in the Morgan Hill/Gilroy area for over 30 years but lost his place and was able to rent a trailer from someone on their property in Alviso. He has a friend here in the area he likes to visit, so he often takes the train and bus to Morgan Hill. He seems to feel a connection to this area. Rex has survived most of his family, other than some far away cousins and such who he never really knew. Ultimately, he is alone.
After Rex pays his rent and monthly expenses, his social security is pretty much wiped out, leaving him short every month to purchase necessities, even food.
That is why you may have seen him around with a sign that says "Please Help... Thank You". I started stopping to give Rex some money when I saw him and to just talk to him. He is extremely interesting, with over 94 years worth of stories.
I hope some of you have had the chance to stop and talk to Rex, if you have, you know that he is a very sweet man. At 94, he deserves more, he at least deserves some help.
So I am setting this up for Rex in hopes that there are people out there that feel the same and want to make sure he doesn't become homeless, help so he has a cushion.
Thank you on behalf of Rex for what I hope is your support. Anything would be appreciated!
