Hunter Family Fire Recovery Fund

Donation protected
My name is Melissa Muller. I live in Naples, Florida. I am fundraising for my brother, Chris, and his family who lost their home and property to a fire on July 26, 2018. Funds received will be used by the Hunter family to secure basic every-day needs (food/clothing/etc) and temporary housing as they rebuild their homestead in Redding, CA.

On July 25, the Carr Fire in Shasta County began enveloping Whiskeytown Lake and surrounding areas. July 26, Chris & Jennifer Hunter and three of their four children, Giselle, Monique and Stella, evacuated their long-time home located northwest of Redding.  All of their pets but one cat (who couldn't be located) and a turtle were also evacuated. Their oldest, Makaiya, just moved to Oregon. He also was safe from harm.

When Chris said goodbye to their property on the afternoon of July 26, firefighters were holding the fire at Iron Mountain Road just west of their home.  The goal was to hold the fire to protect the city of Redding.  During the night, due to high temps and 35 MPH wind gusts, the Carr Fire raged down the mountains and foothills, jumped the Sacramento River and blazed into Redding proper.  The flames were over 100 feet high.

By the time the Carr Fire reached the Sacramento River, The Hunter family home had already been consumed by the flames.

The Hunter family home is gone. Jennifer grew up on a property not far from the Hunter home. It, too, has perished.  Many of Chris and Jennifer's family and friends have also lost their homes and businesses. As of the afternoon of July 27, the Carr Fire still is ablaze.

The Hunter property didn't just contain a house. It was a place dedicated to the earth. The property housed a greenhouse where they started plants for each season.  They grew an abundance of vegetables and fruit.  It was a paradise for the butterflies and bees and for every soul.

They had an orchard with persimmons, figs, cherries, apricots, plums, loquats, olives, apples, and pears.  A day never went by when Jennifer didn't share a photo of one of her many roses or other perfectly tended exotic flowers. It was a place of love and laughter and joy.

Trees will grow again. The house will be rebuilt and the flowers will bloom brighter than before.  Until then, as this family learns what it means to start over again, please consider helping them when they have lost everything but each other.
