Fresh off the heels of our success at this year's PCCSC Conference Championships in Hawaii, as a team, we are looking towards our next goal: showing the country that the #1 Club Sailing team on the West Coast can give Varsity programs a run for their money at the 2018 ICSA National Championships at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
This is our 9th year in a row qualifying for the Coed Nationals, our 5th year in a row qualifying for Women's Nationals, and one of a handful of times we have qualified for the Team Racing National Championship.
The Gauchos made an impressive showing at the 2018 Conference Championships, winning the Co-ed A Division for the first time in over a decade, and ultimately finishing just 6 points shy of first place overall– our best result in recent history.
Our sailors also took the 2018 PCCSC Conference Awards ceremony by storm like never before––
Seniors Christopher Weis and Simone Staff took home Skipper of the Year awards in the Co-ed and Women's Fleets respectively; Freshman Lucas Pierce is a Rookie of the Year Finalist after his dominance in double-handed fleet racing and team racing, as well as an 8th/18 finish at College Singlehanded Nationals in the Fall; Seniors Sterling Henken & Chris Weis and Freshman Lucas Pierce made it to the All-Conference Skippers Team, along with Senior Neil "Haydon" Stapleton, who gracefully made the transition from 2017 All-Conference Crew to 2018 All-Conference Skipper; Freshmen Dot Obel & Olivia Beers, Sophomore Eliza Moody, and Junior Claire Hunt made the All-Conference Crew Team; and Senior Simone Staff took home the Michael Murison Memorial Sportsmanship Award.
Our entire Club Team roster of nearly 40 sailors has pitched in both on the water and off the water to make these successes possible. We've all practiced anywhere from 2-5 days a week, attended school Rec department meetings, volunteered in the Santa Barbara community, held fundraisers, and more, but still as a Club Team one of the biggest obstacles we face is funding.
Every competition we travel to is either paid for by donations or out of our sailors' pockets.
Qualifying for all 3 Nationals this year has been an honor; our next step as a team is to figure out how we can afford it all. For all 3 events, we have a roster of 17 college sailors that need financial assistance paying for airfare, food, rental car costs, gas, and so forth.
If there is any way that you can help us by lifting part of this burden off of our sailors, it would mean the world to us.
Thank you, and go Gauchos! ¡Olé!
