Mickey Torres Memorial Fund

My name is Krystal Perez, and I am the granddaughter of Mickey Torres. In my senior year of high school, my grandmother was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. My grandmother was one of my biggest supporters. So in hearing this news, I cried and asked for time. I at least wanted her to see me receive my high school diploma.  In June of 2013, I received my high school diploma, and my grandmother called me and screamed, "Congratulations Princess!!" Then I went to college in the fall of 2013, and I hoped I would have more time. On my birthday, September 13th, 2014, my grandmother called and sang to me "You are my sunshine." In January I was in need of a laptop, grandma called me in February and said "Princess I got you a laptop, I am going to mail it to you." I was so excited.  It felt like cancer had not changed her. She was the same outgoing, fun-loving grandmother she had always been. I felt like time was on our side.  In the middle of March, grandma called again. She said "Princess, I'm not feeling well, so I have been to the hospital. But when I get out, I will mail it to you. Don't worry about me." On April 24th, my little sister calls me crying, saying that things have gotten worse. I drove from Boston, and saw grandma the next day. The first thing she says to the nurse is, " this is my granddaughter. She goes to Boston University" with the hugest smile on her face. She proceeds to compliment me on my long hair and nails, and tells me that I need to find a good man. The conversation was so casual as if she wasn't sick. I just looked at her as the same person who took us to the pool every summer, the person who sang "Aguanile" on the top of her lungs whenever it came on the radio, and the person who said "Ciao" at the end of every conversation. My grandma was always a radiant angel in my life and on May 18th, Mickey was made one of God's angels too.

Those who knew Mickey, knew that she was a loving, free-spirited, strong woman and a mother.  She had two older children and a 15 year old daughter, Marili. Before being taken away from us, my grandmother had two wishes. She wanted to give Marili a sweet sixteen and wanted to be cremated with a beautiful memorial service when the time came. Although we are all mourning, I ask that friends and family please support Mickey's wishes and help us celebrate and remember her life.
