UConn Summer Field Ecology in South Africa

Hello everyone!

My name is Natalie Pirro and I’m currently a Junior at University of Connecticut studying Wildlife Conservation!

I’m excited to share that this year I’m taking an African Field Ecology course that teaches students an overview of the ecological systems and conservation issues in Southern Africa.

Within this course there is a field study component taught at the Honeyguide Ranger Camp in Limpopo, South Africa. It is here where me and 24 other students will stay for 3 weeks, May-June, studying topics including vegetation and faunal surveys, data collection and analysis, biodiversity monitoring, and conservation management.

As someone who has a deep passion for wildlife conservation, this trip is a dream come true and it will be a valuable opportunity for me to explore my career path on a firsthand basis.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a significant connection with animals. Ever since I saw that Dawn commercial of cleaning oil off a baby duck I knew that I wanted to be involved in helping wildlife. Whether it be in a wildlife rehabilitation or research, there is nothing that I am more passionate about then advocating for those that don’t have a voice to speak for themselves.

In an effort to contribute funds towards my trip, I’ve filled my schedule with multiple jobs, but unfortunately, I still have a long ways to go.

I would be extremely grateful if you can help me make this dream happen and any amount you can contribute would greatly benefit me.

All the funds I receive will be put towards transportation expenses and registering for the program; even if it’s just a few dollars, I firmly believe that every bit helps and I appreciate it immensely.
