Tax deductible
Meet Julie. She is a 7 month old female boxer mix with the absolute sweetest personality ever! Julie came from Alabama where she was found as a stray in bad shape. As soon as DAWGS Prison Program placed her into the facility to start her training, they were immediately notified by the handlers that she was leaking urine while sleeping. Julie was taken to the vet where she was placed on antibiotics for 2 weeks, figuring it was a urinary tract infection. Her condition did not improve.
The vet spayed her and put her on stronger medication while at the same time sending out a urine culture to get to the root of the problem. The culture came back negative for bacteria. It is suspected that Julie may have an Ectopic Ureter. An Ectopic Ureter is an abnormality of the ureter (the tubular tissue that connects the kidney to the urinary bladder) where the ureter does not enter into the urinary bladder in the correct anatomic position. This abnormality is something that cats and dogs are born with and can affect one or both of the ureters. For Julie, she leaks all over herself during the night so every morning her handlers have to give her a bath.
This type of condition is one that makes rescue dogs unadoptable because of the leaky urine and therefore most shelters would euthanize her....but NOT DAWGS PRISON PROGRAM!!!! We are going to do everything we can for this sweet baby to ensure she gets the treatment she needs so that she can move on with her life in a happy home with a forever family. But it's going to come at a very high cost.
Here's what the next steps are for Julie. She is going to go to Ryan Veterinary Hospital in Philadelphia for a full work up. This particular diagnosis can only be confirmed from an MRI or CAT Scan and the treatment requires a very specialized surgery that will cost somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000! Yes this is very expensive, but Julie deserves a better life than what she started out with and she deserves a chance. We will not give up on Julie.
Since we are a non profit organization, we rely on the generous donations of our supporters to keep our doors open. We are asking for donations in any amount to help offset the cost of this surgery. Any amount will help! Please share far and wide to help this baby girl get the medical attention she deserves.
More information about Dogs Achieving Wellness and Good Structure: The goal of our charity is to rescue dogs from high kill shelters so they can get the second chance they deserve. This is accomplished by pairing them with inmates from local prisons who provide dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, and love. The dogs live with the inmates 24/7 where they will learn how to socialize with other individuals and be provided with a routine of eating, crating, and toilet training. The dogs will remain with the inmate until they find their forever home.
