1ST UCLA Students For Students Solidarity Fund

**UPDATE: We are no longer accepting donations to the UCLA Students for Students Solidarity Fund. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported this cause! We raised a total of $13,215 for UCLA undergraduates disproportionately affected by the pandemic through both GoFundMe and Venmo.  64 students received grants ranging from $125-575.  All of the funds have now been redistributed.**

The UCLA Student For Student Solidarity Fund is organized by 1 Student at a Time (1ST). We are a student-led initiative whose mission is to support college students within our community. 1ST was founded in May 2020 by a group of students and faculty at UCLA to address humanitarian crises amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is the 1ST UCLA Students for Students Solidarity Fund?

This UCLA student-led solidarity fund is a communal resource for any student experiencing financial insecurity due to COVID-19. Fundraising will be led through a grassroots campaign consisting of our own classmates, alumni, faculty, and members within the community. We are a resource for covering expenses that cannot be met by other sources provided by UCLA. Funding requests typically range from $250 to $1000, with no upper limit. Requests will be reviewed by 1ST volunteers through the process detailed below. We will also be fundraising through our Venmo account: @UCLA-Solidarity-Fund.

Who are we providing aid to?

We aim to provide aid to UCLA students based on self-identified needs.

Why should I donate?

Over 30,000 UCLA undergraduate’s lives have been affected due to COVID-19. Alongside the associated health risks, many students have suffered financially from the COVID-19-related lockdowns. Many have experienced displacement due to housing restrictions, the loss of on-campus and off-campus jobs and forced into uneasy circumstances.

As the number of COVID-19 cases in California continues to rise, we will continue to see financial and health-related impacts within our community. We want to acknowledge the fear and uncertainty shared amongst students entering the 2020 school year amidst a global pandemic and unstable political climate.

We plan on fundraising and redistributing financial aid to accommodate students’ needs as soon as possible. The money will go towards rent, food, medical bills, technology, etc. We want to alleviate the impact COVID-19 has had on students within our community. Our goal is to provide students with necessary financial support to start the 2020 school year. No student’s education should be compromised due to the financial inability to access basic needs.

Timeline

We hope to collect all necessary funds by September 10th, 2020. Students will be notified of the status of funding by September 15th, 2020 and funds will be distributed shortly after. The 1ST UCLA Students For Students Solidarity Fund will occur on a quarterly basis. Any leftover funding will be reserved for those who apply during the winter quarter.

Fund Allocation Process:

1. Students can request funding from our request form which will be released on August 15th. The deadline for submission will be September 4th.

2. The request is made anonymous by a designated single volunteer.

3. Three volunteers will see the anonymized requests and determine funding allocations based on the need identified by the student and available funds. Students will be updated regarding the status of their request on September 15th, 2020.

4. The funds are transferred through Zelle, Venmo, or checks by 2-4 other 1ST volunteers. The single volunteer with un-anonymized student information will coordinate with these volunteers giving them each a list of students and the amount to be transferred to each. These volunteers will contact each student to coordinate the transfer of funds.

What are the previous and current funding opportunities for students?

During spring quarter, UCLA students were provided with the following opportunities for funding: UCLA CARES Act, UCLA SWC Student Relief Grant, The UCLA Basic Needs Subsidy Program, USAC COVID-19 Student Relief Grant. However, we recognize that this was not sufficient to meet students’ basic needs and not everyone who applied received adequate funding.

For fall quarter, these resources are no longer available, and there are currently limited additional funding opportunities. Therefore, there is an urgent need to raise more funds to support our fellow students to succeed in completing their higher education. The current resources available include the UCLA Economic Crisis Response Team and Emergency Funding for Native American and Indigenous Students During COVID-19.
