UC Berkeley Alternative Breaks: San Diego Trip

We are a group of UC Berkeley students who are planning a trip to San Diego this spring break. We are part of Alternative Breaks, a program of the Public Service Center at the University. On our trip, we will work closely with the immigrant community that has been facing extreme challenges as a consequence of anti-immigrant policies in place. At the moment, the southern border has become a literal and figurative battleground for migrants from all over the world attempting to cross over into the United States to live a “Dignified life.” So, it is important to ask ourselves, is the American Dream real for immigrants and is it worthy of being called a dignified life? To prepare for the trip, we will conduct a semester-long course where we will examine the humanitarian crisis at the southern border and how it continuously affects the lives of immigrants and generations beyond, within, and outside the US. On this trip, we will work alongside Border Angels, an organization that has dedicated its time to advocate for migrants at the border. We will dedicate our service to the immigrant community through cultural humility and hope to learn of other ways we can collaborate with the immigrant community in the future.

This trip is student-organized and funded, so we are reaching out to our community to help us fundraise for this trip. Immigrant issues have been overlooked for far too long, it is time that we take action and highlight the importance and agency of migrants in the United States. Your donations will help us make the trip happen. Most importantly, your donations will provide basic necessities that migrants might need along their journey.

Somos un grupo de estudiantes de UC Berkeley que estamos planeando un viaje a San Diego durante las vacaciones de primavera. Somos parte de Alternative Breaks, un programa del Centro de Atención al Público de la Universidad de California, Berkeley. En nuestro viaje trabajaremos de cerca con la comunidad inmigrante que ha estado enfrentando desafíos extremos como consecuencia de las políticas antiinmigrantes vigentes. Por el momento, la frontera con los Estados Unidos se ha convertido en un campo de guerra literal y figurativo para los migrantes de todo el mundo que intentan cruzar a los Estados Unidos para vivir una “vida digna”. Entonces, es importante preguntarnos, ¿el Sueño Americano es real para los inmigrantes y es digno de llamarse vida digna? Para prepararnos para el viaje, realizaremos un curso de un semestre en el que examinaremos la crisis humanitaria en la frontera con los Estados Unidos y cómo afecta continuamente la vida de los inmigrantes y las generaciones más allá, dentro y fuera de los EE. UU. En este viaje trabajaremos junto a Ángeles de la Frontera, una organización que ha dedicado su tiempo a abogar por los migrantes en la frontera. Dedicaremos nuestro servicio a la comunidad inmigrante a través de la humildad cultural y esperamos aprender de otras formas en que podamos colaborar con la comunidad inmigrante en el futuro.
