Mission Trip to Uganda

Education changes lives.
Fourteen years ago a very special bond was formed between Chicago, Illinois and Uganda, Africa. A visiting priest, Father Matthias spoke of the need for education for the children in Uganda. It struck a chord with one parishioner, Kim Arndt. Father Matthias connected Kim with Jaki, a deserving young girl. Kim chose to sponsor Jaki’s educational career. Since then, Jaki has graduated from Makerere University with a degree in Veterinary medicine. This sponsorship changed Jaki’s future and life forever with giving her the gift of opportunity through education.
This sponsorship lead to an entire program called “One Heart Uganda”. Now in 2020, there are a total of 130 children, just like Jaki, sponsored by many Saint Andrew School and Parish families! Often orphaned or at-risk, these bright, talented young people are given new hope through annual tuition sponsorships. Through the years, Saint Andrew has answered a variety of needs from bikes for Catechists to reach outstations to the construction of water wells and the building of school classrooms and boarding dormitories.
With so much need and so many deserving programs, it’s difficult to know how to really make an impact. In June 2020, we (Annie and Emily) have the opportunity to make a lasting impact. Being teachers at Saint Andrew gives us the unique gift to share the experience of traveling to Uganda with our students in Chicago directly! When in Africa, we will have the opportunity to visit the schools, teach lessons, meet and interview all sponsored children to strengthen the bond with sponsor families. We are planning to use this experience to strengthen our own curriculum at Saint Andrew School through a connection to the academic program.
Your monetary gift will help support our life-changing trip. It will support our travel, accommodations, and vaccinations. Any amount over our goal will be donated to the hands-up fund which offers additional financial assistance to those entering college or universities.
