For nearly two weeks, thousands of families in Gary, Indiana endured an extraordinary crisis after severe storms devastated Northwest Indiana and caused one of the most prolonged power outages the community has experienced.

The August 11, 2026 derecho brought winds reaching approximately 99 mph, damaging trees, utility poles, power lines, homes, and infrastructure throughout the region. Nearly 38,300 utility customers in Gary lost electricity following the storm.

Although power has now been largely restored, recovery does not end when the lights come back on.

Families were forced to throw away refrigerators and freezers full of spoiled food. Residents purchased ice, gasoline, batteries and emergency supplies day after day. Some struggled to safely store medications or operate medical equipment. Others temporarily relocated, missed work, or faced unexpected expenses simply trying to make it through the blackout.

The United Brotherhood of America (UBA) is launching the Help Gary Recover: UBA Blackout Relief Fund to stand with the people of Gary as they recover.

Our goal is simple: turn brotherhood into action.

Funds raised through this campaign will be dedicated to supporting blackout-affected Gary residents with needs such as:

Grocery and food replacement assistance

Emergency household supplies

Water, hygiene products and necessities

Assistance for seniors and vulnerable residents

Replacement of essential items lost during the outage

Recovery assistance for families facing storm- and blackout-related financial hardship

Community relief and recovery efforts

We believe that when one community is hurting, others have a responsibility to answer the call.

Gary's residents endured days of darkness, uncertainty and disruption. Now is an opportunity to remind them that they are not standing alone.

Whether you can give $10, $25, $50, $100 or more, every contribution can help a family move another step toward recovery. If you cannot donate, please share this campaign with your family, friends, coworkers, organizations and social networks.

Gary, we stand with you.
