Rashelle and Joey were high school sweethearts but went their separate ways in high school. Years later they found each other again and it was fate. They moved from Thunder Bay to start their lives together in Kelowna BC. In 2014 they found out they were expecting their first child. During the pregnancy they got the news that their unborn baby girl had a condition called Gastroscisis.
Gastroschisis is a relatively uncommon condition that occurs in approximately 1 in 5,000 live births. It is one of a group of birth defects known as abdominal wall defects, which occur very early in gestation and are characterized by an opening in the abdominal wall of the fetus.
Most cases of gastroschisis involve the intestine and other abdominal organs herniating (protruding) through an opening (hole) in the abdominal wall and spilling out into the amniotic fluid around the fetus.
They would need to make trips often from Kelowna to Vancouver to see the specialist, nearly a 4 hour drive. They also had to prepare to relocate to Vancouver for their daughters birth and treatment afterwards.
Mila Livia Gamache was born May 6 2015 in Vancouver BC weighing 5lb 11oz.
Her mommy and daddy have not left their miracles side and have tried to keep the most positive attitude during a difficult time like this. She has such a strong mama saying "it's hard now but I'm trying to stay positive. One day this will all just be a memory."
In the last week she has undergone numerous surgeries to try to fix her condition but as of now the outcome does not seem bright. The doctors had to remove her bowel and she suffered complications during surgery and is currently on life support.
Rashelle and I have been friends for over 10 years and I feel very helpless that I cannot be there with her in her time of need. I am setting up this Go Fund Me account to try to help with travel expenses for family or if the worst happens help with funeral expenses. This is something no parent should ever have to go through and if any burden can be lifted this is it.
Please keep Mila and her mommy and daddy in your thoughts and prayers and if you are able please donate in any way you can. It is greatly appreciated.
