I am Shahad from Gaza, 20 years old, studying English. My family and I fled our home after it was destroyed by the occupation forces while we were inside, leading to injuries to some family members, including my brother who suffered skull fractures, seizures, and lost vision in his right eye.

During our displacement, we moved several times, and our final stop was the Rafah Mawasi camps in the south, where we now reside in a tent, struggling to obtain the basic necessities of life like water, food, and internet to sustain ourselves.

We endured over 6 months of suffering, facing unimaginable pain, oppression, and loss every day. Due to the current situation, the shortage of medical resources and the halt of services in hospitals led to the passing of my father after a battle with illness, suffering from kidney failure and heart weakness. My grandmother also passed away after a long struggle with illness, suffering from a stroke and brain haemorrhage.

Additionally, my aunt’s health condition, diagnosed with cancer two months before the war, worsened as hospitals were bombed, leaving her without access to treatment. Additionally, my uncle suffers from heart problems, which have worsened following the bombing of his home and harsh living conditions in the tents, with a shortage of medications. His son Mahmoud, aged four, suffers from developmental disorders, a brain problem which affects his speech, high levels of ammonia causing toxicity, involuntary urination, and various other problems. He was receiving treatment from a specialist. However, the war disrupted communication with the doctor, and Mahmoud couldn’t continue his treatment as the doctor left the country.

The treacherous occupation didn’t stop there, causing the martyrdom of around 20 of my relatives in an Israeli airstrike on December 9, 2023, including my uncle and his children along with their families, some still buried under the rubble. Our home was also damaged by the war, and now everything is gone - the house, the neighbourhood where I spent my entire life, and with them, all my memories.
