This is the story of a remarkable woman named Amy Corrigan who is a many time world champion equestrian. I am Amy's mother's best friend and I remember seeing a room full of trophies and ribbons she won in local and national competitions from the age of six years. Suddenly her life changed. Amy suffered a near fatal auto accident which left her in a coma fighting for her life and paralyzed from the neck down(C-6,C-7 level). Against all odds, she did survive and thus began her life as a quadriplegic revolving around intensive care, rehabilitation, and grueling physical therapy.
This was all at the same time she was about to begin her last semester of graduate school to obtain a Master's degree in clinical psychology. The tenacious and determined young woman that she is, she did accomplish this goal from her hospital bed during the following five months. She then completed the 3,000 intern hours necessary to be a marriage and family therapist.
There is now some hope for Amy's further improvement because two of her physicians in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills California from the California Stem Cell Treatment Center believe that although it is not certain, stem cell treatments could potentially help her gain fine and gross motor skills. This would allow her to have greater use of her hands and increase her balance.
Amy needs treatment every two to three months for one year beginning on September 25, 2015. The cost is
$25,000.00
Anyone who knows Amy, knows horses were the most important thing in her life. She has a rare and unique bond with them, almost telepathic. Her riding ability was a God-given gift, effortless. This is the only explanation doctors attribute for Amy being able to ride at a walk without the use of an adaptive saddle. The possibility to resume this passion of her life in any capacity is her dream, her hope, and her prayer. Of course, the ultimate would be the ability to again walk independently without the use of an RGO brace and walker.
We are asking for anyone who knows Amy, or even anyone who doesn't, but maybe shares her passion for horses or maybe understands her life challenges, to contribute whatever amount you can.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to look at Amy's site and hear her story.
