Enough is Enough

We have tried to do this with the help of the system and we have had moments of success, but when you see a timeframe from September to date that has Jared going in circles. It's truly time to speak out and show other have failed and flawed our system is! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
As many of you know, our 29 year old son, Jared has wrestled with mental illness and addiction issues for the past 10 years. ( Autistic, Schizophrenic and Substance Abuse). We have tried for years to find a specialized program that will work with all 3 of his diagnoses. We have tried to support him in our home, he lived in motel rooms and apartments for extended periods of time with the help from our limited resources. Thousands of dollars were spent for him to attempt to get the help he needed. There wasn't any financial support until 3 years ago when we finally were able to get him on SSI. ( A whopping $750/month to pay for an apartment and all other expenses) That has since come to a halt because of his numerous inpatient stays. There is no outside funding. Since September of 2019 to date our son has been the pawn in the Mental Health/Substance Abuse system. He has been in over 9 Facilities in an 8 month period. Our son is sitting in a hospital right now waiting to be discharged again. The hospitals stabilize him on medication and then he gets transferred to a Dual Diagnosis facility (a facility that should be 50% knowledgeable on both Substance Abuse and Mental Illness). Once there, they take him off all of his medications which lands him back into a hospital to start this insane process again. The definition of "Insanity"is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results! It is time he get the proper help he needs. We have found two facilities that will look at Jared as a whole and treat the multiple diagnoses. One is in Texas, called Menninger Clinic, and the other is in Massachusetts is called Mclean. The Autism piece is tricky as the "Capacity" of understanding is lacking in a person with autism. This has been very confusing to Jared when he gets discharged from program to program because he's being non-compliant with medication due to changes in dosage from one place to another, or he can't sit in a 3-hour Intensive Treatment Program on ZOOM! Needless to say, the Autism piece has been overlooked, which is a disability. We have also reached out to Disability Rights in PA because of the numerous times Jared has been set up without the accommodations he needs to succeed. Through all of this, as Jared continues to be sent from facility to facility that advertise themselves as dual diagnoses facilities but are truly out to profit off the patient. It is sad that the sick and the vulnerable are the ones that get preyed upon. Our family continues to advocate for Jared, yet he still can't get the help he needs. I often think of others like our son, whose families can't provide the financial help or support to them. They are alone and will end up homeless or dead.
Our system needs to change and recognize that these diseases are no different than any other, and they need just as much if not more support. We need updated Mental Health facilities staffed with well-versed personnel.
Jared has been homeless, in prison for 4( months because he was given a stolen bicycle while on probation). He has been in a psyche hospital at least 15 times since age 17. We have fought to get Jared into group homes which wasn't an easy task. He would get in and then relapse (which goes along with recovery) he then would be removed from the group home and hospitalized and the process would start all over. Bounced around from facility to facility. Now again in limbo. The system sets him up for failure.
All funding will go toward Jared's program with the hope of finding him the understanding and peace he so much deserves. #autismspeaks.
Help us prove there is help for "the Jareds" out there and pave the way for others! We are asking for $75,000 because that is the amount these facilities charge for a residential treatment program. Our Health insurance doesn't cover it and the people that do get the best services are the people with unlimited means. We will also keep you updated with the progress of Jared and how the money is spent and what the program entails.
He is still sitting in a hospital in Philadelphia as all of his medication is being relooked at - but with the understanding that with Jared a "Compromise" and "Listening" to his needs are helping with meeting him in the middle.
With our sincere "Thank You!"
