For the past two and a half years, we have been trying to start our family. While this journey began with us trying to conceive naturally, it quickly led to needing specialized medical assistance and fertility treatments. We have spent the last year working with a team of specialized fertility physicians in Iowa City with the hopes of having a baby. In that time we have gone through two IVF retrievals and five embryo transfers. Three of these transfers resulted in two ectopic pregnancies, which then required the removal of both fallopian tubes, and one failed pregnancy. In moving forward, the physicians recommend a Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) test to determine the genetic makeup of each embryo. This costly test is not covered by insurance and requires another IVF retrieval and additional embryo transfers. While we are hopeful that this next step will be successful and that we will be blessed with a child of our own, we know that there are no guarantees. In the case that this does not work, the next step would be adoption.
Our road to becoming parents and starting our family has been an extremely emotional journey. We have experienced the highest of highs when hearing that we were pregnant and the lowest of lows when learning that our pregnancies were lost. In addition to the emotional rollercoaster that comes with our infertility, the financial hardship has also impacted us greatly.
We both share a passion for children as we are both elementary educators. We know firsthand the joy children bring to our lives and we long to experience this with our own child. While we have tried to accomplish this on our own, we are at the point where we are fully dependent on our doctors, family and friends, and above all, God.
Until this point in time, we have been able to manage our financial responsibilities related to our treatments independently, but have now exhausted our funds to move on to the next phase of our journey. It is with great humility that we are reaching out for help to make our dream of having a child a reality.
