A brief moment. That’s how long it took for ten month old Jesse to fall into his grandparents’ backyard pond. It was this brief moment that has changed his life forever.
Jesse's mother Kristin pulled him from the water and immediately began CPR on him. Jesse was in full respiratory arrest. In ER the medical team worked tirelessly to keep Jesse alive. He suffered two cardiac arrests before he was stable enough for the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team to transport him to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. Doctors prepared our family for the worst with the prognosis of his sure passing before morning. “I couldn’t believe what they were telling me,” recalled Kristin, “Only a few hours ago, we were laughing and running around playing, and now he has so many tubes and lines going into him everywhere. It seems like there isn’t even an inch of skin left on him for me to kiss.”
Jesse has survived countless hurdles during three long months in hospital, but on his discharge he has now received over 160 hyperbaric oxygen treatments as well as too many other therapy protocols to list since his drowning, and none of which are covered by Health Canada. Our days are filled with endless appointments, a rigorous therapy schedule, and tending to Jesse’s on-going medical needs.
Jesse cannot yet stand or walk or talk beyond his few simple words, but his smile lights up the room and he has an infectious lauph. But he is still so far, far away from where he needs to be for a normal and happy life.
For Jesse and us, life is different now than it was.
