I will be leaving for Krakow, Poland on March 18, 2022. I am currently unemployed and have decided to go to Przemsyl to assist those fleeing Ukraine. After being rejected from joining the Ukrainian International Legion of Territorial Defense because I am too old and out of shape (I actually agree), I have decided to volunteer with the Ukrainian Council.
My ultimate goal is to do whatever I can to help desperate families. The majority of monies raised will go to help fleeing Ukrainians pay for bare necessities and to help them on their journey to a new home whether it is temporary or permanent.
The Stittsville IDA pharmacy has donated some basic medical supplies at no cost that I will be bringing with me. My bag is also packed with playing cards, flashlights, dice, and even 5 pounds of trail mix – these are items I have already paid for on my own and are not part of the expenses referenced above.
Background:
My grandfather's family responded to Catherine II's decree of 1763-4 that guaranteed financial incentives, religious freedom, and exemption from military service for foreign settlers in the area. In 1789 Mennonite farmers living in Prussia (Poland) moved to the southeastern region of Ukraine and began to build their homes, prepare the land for growing, and ultimately farm the steppes of western Russia. The Mennonites were a minority and they created self-sufficient colonies that employed many Ukrainian workers.
The Mennonite commitment to non-violence made them easy targets for the Bolshevic bandits and Stalin's oppression. My grandfather fled from a place known as Friedensruh in 1925 after many of his family were sadistically murdered right in front of him. He came to Canada and made his new home in Point Pelee (now a national park). I am the son of one of his four children. We have lived a good life in Canada and I am more than happy to go and help the less fortunate.
