James David Garces (aka Rooster) broke his jaw due to a traffic accident on the evening of May 8th 2015 in Galveston, TX. The left hinge of his jaw was completely shattered and the right side of the Jaw was a clean break off the right hinge. The jaw bone itself had three fractures, one on the right, and one on each side of his chin. Unfortunately the surgeons were unable to reconnect the shattered left side of his jaw, however they were able to reconnect the right side which will now support the entire jaw.
**Due to David's injuries to the inside of his mouth and teeth, two photos had to be removed from our description**
His mouth has been wired shut and he will return to the hospital in six weeks to remove the wires and the dental team will then come in to see what they can do to repair his smile. For six weeks he will be on a liquid diet until his wires are removed.
David had just started a position at a local grocery store and was in the hiring grace period before he could be eligible for their insurance. Due to the nature of his injury and his newhire status, he is unable to work for at least six months which has caused David to lose his job at the local grocery store. We estimate the costs of David's medical bills (which include hospital stay, reconstructive surgery, medications, and extensive dental reparations) will be about $100,000.
We're reaching out to the community and family to help support David during his recovery and to cover the medical bills. Any contributions during David's time of need would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. Love, his sisters.
1. David shattered the top six front teeth as they slammed and tore through his bottom lip. You can also see that his bottom teeth are pushed back which is due to his jaw fractures on each side of his chin. The injuries you can't see are the following: Left side jaw, shattered (Doctors were unable to repair) and three jaw fractures, one on the right, and one on each side of his chin. Left hinge shattered; right hinge broken off. David also suffered a two inch cut exposing his chin bone.
2. May 8th through May 10th David was on morphine and ice packs. The doctor's were unable to perform the needed surgery for three days until the swelling from his injuries had gone down. He was in surgery for five and a half hours due to the delicate nature of removing the bone shards from the shattered left portion of the jaw.
3. The surgery consisted of placing three permanent metal plates which connected the three fractures along the jawline, ten vertical wires starting on the right to as far left as the surgeons could place them. Two horizontal wires, one running along the top of his mouth and the other running along the jaw line. His mouth will be wired shut for six weeks. The surgeons were forced to snip both sides of his mouth during the surgery to widen his mouth in order to reconnect his jaw.
