Kyle's Summer At Brown University

Hello, My name is Kyle Lee. I have been accepted to attend Brown University’s Pre-College TheaterBridge Summer Program. The TheaterBridge Program is renowned for its development of acting skills through intensive training for seven weeks. John Krasanski (The Office), Julie Bowen (Modern Family) and Emma Watson (Harry Potter films) are notable alumni. The program is highly competitive: 2,100 students applied, and I was one of the 32 who were accepted.

I am presently enrolled in the 11th grade at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Saint Ann’s School is a private institution for the intellectually gifted and cultivates interests in the arts. I travel from Pennsylvania to Brooklyn to attend school each day. It is not easy to commute, but it is worthwhile; I love Saint Ann’s School: the teachers, students, administrators and the breadth of courses that are offered  help bring my knowledge to new heights. (I have, amongst other things, learned to speak both Mandarin and French fluently.) 

My confidence and skill in acting  have flourished since my enrollment at Saint Ann’s School. I have acted in plays which range in genre from musical theatre (Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd) to more drama intensive roles ( The Writer in Lady of Larkspur Lotion). I have also  developed vocally as a baritone/lyric tenor with  classical and choral training as well as  musical theater [notable performed pieces include Domine Ad Adjuvandum me (Tenor solo), Bois Epais and  The Impossible Dream.]

Historically, men of color are underrepresented in stage acting with luminary exceptions such as Paul Robeson and James Earl Jones. I want to become another notable black male voice on the stage.

Money raised  would be used to pay the balance of the tuition --$4,696 -- (tuition is $7,996 for the seven-week program -- my mother made a $300 nonrefundable deposit, and I was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship for $3,000) as well as the 5% fee for using this website, the 2.9% withdrawal fee and necessities once I get to Brown.
