Help Susan Resnick Transition to Stable Housing
Donation protected
My mom, Susan Resnick, is a 74-year-old woman and beloved figure in many a Miami community. Even though my mom has lived at or below the poverty line for most of her adult life, she always made sure we had a roof over our heads and food in the fridge.
Late last year, right before her second hip replacement, she was told she needed to leave the efficiency she had lived in since 2017. Rental prices in Miami since then have skyrocketed. While recovering from surgery, she faced an extremely tight housing market and few options. Besides the surgery, she has several chronic mobility and pain issues that make tasks more difficult and extra time-consuming.
My mom has an income of $14,184 a year: $1,052 a month from social security, and $390 every quarter from an annuity. This puts her slightly over the federal poverty line, which is set at $13,590. The reality is that, in Miami, the poverty line is actually a much higher yearly income.
Two weeks before needing to leave her efficiency on June 1, a friend offered her a room in her and her husband’s house. The rent was $800 a month, offered in a handshake deal. Three days after moving in, they decided to change their minds, and she was told she needed to leave immediately.
In the years since I moved out at 17, I have helped support my mom financially. I wish I had the means to take care of this myself, but the reality is that I don’t. I am lucky to have a slightly higher station in life than my parents, but I still struggle to pay the bills every month. Living across the country from my mom, I'm also unable to provide the immediate material support she needs.
This is why I’m starting this fundraiser, and reaching out to the many people who know me and my mom, and maybe the occasional stranger who decides to pitch in. If we reach the goal, the money will be used in the following ways:
Cost of moving in: First and last month's rent and security deposit: $3,000
Immediate place to stay: $1,000
Cover some of the costs of food and transportation for a month so she can focus on finding a new place: $1,000
If you can't contribute, I'd really appreciate it if you could share. Thank you everyone!
Much love,
Rob
