Christmas Eve, a time of excitement and joy, took an unexpected turn for our family and our cherished companion, Paddington. As we prepared for the festive season, Paddington experienced a distressing accident – an awkward landing that resulted in a significant injury to his front leg. We rushed to our local vet, where Paddington received urgent pain relief and underwent X-rays that confirmed a severe break.
The timing proved challenging as Christmas Eve limited our options for immediate specialized care. However, hope emerged when we were informed that a veterinary hospital, an hour away, could take Paddington. The subsequent assessments revealed distressing news – the fracture was more intricate than anticipated, necessitating 3D surgery and a CT scan. Moreover, concerns arose about possible pre-existing fissures that might have made his legs prone to such injuries, with the CT scan confirming a significant fissure in his left leg.
As a family, we faced an emotionally wrenching 24 hours, consulting various specialists to determine the best course for Paddington. Their unanimous positivity regarding his future as a young, vibrant family dog inspired us to give him every fighting chance.
Paddington isn't just a pet; he holds a vital role in our lives and our work outdoors. He serves as a source of comfort for children with additional support needs (ASN), anxiety, or withdrawal. His wagging tail and patient demeanor offer solace to those in distress. In our neurotypical children's clubs, he plays, runs, and shares his boundless love, providing a unique opportunity for those without dogs to experience the warmth of canine companionship. Moreover, for our veteran personnel attending recovery workshops, Paddington embodies hope and unconditional love.
Currently, Paddington is undergoing surgery to mend and pin his broken right leg. The road to recovery spans 6-8 weeks, requiring constant care initially, followed by months of crate rest. Subsequently, another surgery awaits to fortify his other leg with a joint pin placement.
We do have insurance but this is only up to the cost of £3000. We humbly ask for any donation, no matter the size, to support Paddington's journey towards recovery. The cost and estimated cost so far :
- Emergency veterinary care / Xray's/ pain relief £939.41
- CT Scan £1000
- Surgery to repair break £5,500
- Surgery for pin in second leg £3,500
Thank you for considering and supporting Paddington during this challenging time. Your generosity means the world to us and embodies the spirit of compassion that defines the holiday season.
Pip, Stu, Aiden, Paige and Paddington
