Helping Kevin Recover

Kevin had his first stroke on 2/28/15. We were told by all of the doctors that examined him that he was still in the stage of what they called an “evolving stroke” and because his left carotid artery was 100% blocked there was nothing they could do.  The doctors told us that “it was VERY UNLIKELY” for him to stroke again on the left side of his brain. Ultimately on 3/3/2015 they discharged him home. He had a second stroke two days later on 3/6/2015 at 4 am in the morning on the exact side the doctors told us that he should NEVER be able to stroke on again… the left side of his brain.
Since 2/28/15 Kev has gone through a great deal. While we are all EXTREMELY GRATEFUL he is alive, we also have been going through some very difficult challenges. Kevin's greatest deficit, his speech, is from his second stroke that has left him unable to communicate effectively. Surely those of you who know Kevin well must know that this is a HUGE problem for him as he is REALLY A BIG TALKER!
While Kevin is no longer paralyzed on his right side, and can walk, and he can move his limbs he is still going through extensive speech therapy in an inpatient rehabilitation home. Kevin has severe expressive and receptive aphasia. While he can talk (use his voice) you can only understand some of what he says. The doctors describe his speech as jargon or “word salad “Word salad is a "confused or unintelligible mixture of seemingly random words and phrases”, most often used to describe a symptom of a neurological disorder in which a person attempts to communicate an idea, but words and phrases that may appear to be random and unrelated come out in an incoherent sequence instead. Often, the person is unaware that he or she does not make sense.
Losing control of his speech has left Kevin extremely frustrated, and confused. Can you image knowing exactly what you want to say, but when you go to say it, it just comes out like jumbled unintelligible words? This is what Kev has been going through since the breathing tubes were removed after emergency surgery on 3/7/2015.

Kevin has gone through over 15 days in the hospital, and he has been in inpatient rehabilitation for almost 2 months. The doctors are clear that his recovery will take time. How much time no one can say, however they do say that by September we will know where he will most likely be neurologically for the rest of his life. This has been a LIFE CHANGING EVENT for our family.

All of this being said, while we are fortunate to have great insurance, we still have a HUGE amount of hospital, doctor, and rehabilitation bills. We are asking for your help please to raise money for our bills while we continue on the road to recovery.

We are also asking for your thoughts and prayers to be with our family at this most difficult time.

Blessings to all of you as well…
