Widefield School District 3 Administration and Grand Mountain School (Colorado Springs, CO) sent the El Paso County Sherriff’s Office to the home of 12 year old, Isaiah Elliott, for playing with a TOY gun during a virtual online class. The school then suspended him for five days, deprived him of his education, and denied him access to class instruction while completely disregarding his learning disability. 

The school administration claims that this was a safety concern and that a welfare check by law enforcement was warranted. However, the school failed to immediately notify his parents. Sherriff deputies took over four hours to respond, and on the body camera footage that has since been redacted, school administrators and deputies laughed and made jokes about the situation. Deputies also admitted there was no legal grounds for criminal charges while speaking with school administrators. When deputies arrived to our home, they threatened to press charges on multiple occasions.  Imminent

AT NO POINT DID THE SCHOOL OR DEPUTIES HAVE ISAIAH’S SAFETY OR BEST INTEREST AT HEART. AT NO POINT DID THEY FEEL AS IF ISAIAH WAS IN IMMINENT DANGER OR A THREAT TO HIMSELF OR OTHERS. INSTEAD THEY LAUGHED, PROCRASTINATED, AND USED THIS AS AN INTIMIDATION FACTOR; LEAVING OUR SON TRAUMATIZED OVER SOMETHING AS INNOCENT AND LEGAL AS PLAYING WITH A TOY GUN IN THE COMFORT OF HIS OWN HOME.  

Please help us in ensuring this never happens to another family again and that those responsible for their negligent actions are held accountable. Schools need to know that they cannot overstep their jurisdiction into our private homes. Schools have got to stop criminalizing children’s behavior. No child should ever have to experience something like this.

This has definitely been an exhausting journey thus far but this is just the very beginning. This is much bigger than just us! This is about our children and future generations. They deserve better! With your support, not only can Isaiah receive justice, but we can start paving the way for generations to come through spreading awareness and creating much needed change on following issues:

·       School to Prison Pipeline

·       Discrimination against kids with disability

·       Lack of resources to adequately assist children who require support

·       Invasion of Privacy

·       Criminalizing Children

·       Lack of E-learning guidelines & policies

·       Schools over reaching their jurisdiction

·       Lack of cultural awareness; diversity and awareness training

**All funds will go directly towards legal fees, educational expenses, counseling sessions, and charitable donations to help with the causes mentioned above.**
