I am a teacher. I teach Math to underprivileged students from the South Park community in Los Angeles, California. During my free time I am the Advisor for the DREAMERS Club, a club that aims to help undocumented high school students get prepared for college. 10/10 of my Senior DREAMER students were accepted to 4-year colleges next fall. Although the DREAMER’s club is excited about their accomplishment, we are still trying to figure out how to make their dreams of attending college a reality.
The students’ low-income and inability to receive federal funding means that they will not be able to have money for necessities like books, school supplies, and a laptop. I was in their shoes five years ago, (I am undocumented (DACA) myself) and I am forever grateful with everyone who helped me in my college journey. Now, thanks to all of those people, I am able to teach Mathematics.
We need your help!
Our goal is to fundraise $5,000 through GoFundMe and to find a Matching Donor (We may have one potential donor-if we meet our goal).
The $5,000 fundraised through GoFundMe will be split evenly amongst all 10 students, with each of them receiving $500 to help them pay for college books.
If the second goal of finding matching funds for the $5,000 is met, that money will be used to purchase each student a basic laptop valued at $430.
100% of all donations will go to the 10 DREAMERS.
The following is a list of colleges/universities that our DREAMERS have been accepted to:
California State University, Los Angeles
California State University, Dominguez Hills
California State University, Northridge
California State University, San Bernardino
California State University, Chico
California State University, Fullerton
University of California, Los Angeles
University of California, Riverside
University of California, Santa Cruz
University of California, Davis
Any type of contribution will be much appreciated. I assure you that your contribution, small or large, will make a big difference in the lives of these young men and women. As of now, only 3.4% (1,071 out of 30,496 people) of South Park residents aged 25 or older has completed a four-year degree. Also, a whopping 69.4% of South Park residents have less than a high school diploma (3rd-highest of any city neighborhood). This group of students has the potential to turn this community around. All of them are family oriented, self-driven, and selfless. And most importantly, all of them share one thing: they are passionate about receiving a higher education only to return and share their wealth of knowledge with other students in their community. I thank you in advance for your contribution. I promise you that the return of investment will be well worth it.
Best,
Mr. Rodriguez
