Unsex Me Web Series Crowdfunding Campaign
Donation protected
Hello! My name is Hannah Aman and I am the Creator & Showrunner of the "Unsex Me" web series. I am incredibly excited to begin production on this 5-episode web series, with our entirely female/queer/nonbinary crew.
Why you should I donate?
By investing in Unsex Me, you're investing in the future careers of not only myself, but also my cast and crew. Increasing female & queer representation in film & television starts with us young film students! We also have some super cool donation tiers at the bottom of this page :)
Logline
Blaire is an avid fanfiction enjoyer. Sick of not being able to see herself (a closeted lesbian), in the fanfiction she reads, she decides to write the sapphic fanfiction of her dreams. But when it goes viral, she has to decide between remaining anonymous, or coming out both as the author and as a lesbian.
Artist’s Statement
Whether Hollywood admits it or not, coming out is an integral and complicated part of the universal queer experience. I've always hated the classic broadcast “coming out episode”; with beats of 1) questioning, 2) coming out, 3) the straight protagonist reacting poorly, 4) both characters having a crisis about it, then 5) them reconciling everything and living happily ever after. Every queer person has had to come out at some point, and yet I’ve never known a coming-out story that broadcast television would approve of. I guess authentic coming-out stories don’t fit a five-act structure.
Unsex Me follows the much healthier journey of a young, closeted lesbian who discovers these things. That coming out isn’t a series of steps, how horrible comp-het is, and why sapphic fanfiction isn’t as popular. I wrote Unsex Me for myself, to get it out of my system, and because I was scared of it: I didn’t want anyone to read it or even know these things about me. But I also wrote it because this was a story I’d wished I had, and therefore I knew that other people would want it, too.
What has been the most impactful part of the writing and pre-production process has been the encouragement from my peers and crew members about how necessary this story is. In an era where openly queer stories and creators have more visibility than in the past, it's important to remember being queer doesn't start when you come out. And now, we need your support to help this series come to fruition!
