My name is Alana Burns. I am raising money for friends who have had a catastrophic medical issue and need our help.
Ruben Vega is a father, husband, friend, soccer coach and Electrical Engineer at a lighting innovation company in NH. On Monday April 20th, Ruben had a large stroke at home. There was a tear in his carotid artery that built up plaque and caused a clot that went to his brain.
Initially, Ruben lost his ability to move and to speak. It also means he can't work, can't coach and can't be at home with his family.
This stroke is one of a series of setbacks his family has had this Spring. Ruben had knee surgery - though he had recovered and was about to return to the soccer pitch. His wife Melanie was in a car accident. She was fine but, their car was totalled. And, his son Gabriel had shoulder surgery three days before Ruben's stroke, to recover from a snowboarding accident over the winter. They are a family that usually has some savings but, they've had setback after setback. And, this stroke is a big one...
Ruben is now undergoing therapy at Spaulding Rehab in Boston. And, there is some progress to report. He has regained much of his ability to walk but, hasn't yet recovered full use of one of his arms. And, a bilingual Spanish/English speaker, Ruben has not yet recovered his speech, in either language. - though he is able now to put a few understandable words together. This gives his family hope.
Ruben and his family (Melanie, Gabriel and daughter Melia) need your support. Their family income is decimated. They have some short term disability income. Melanie is in the last two months of her degree program before she can return to full time work. And, their expenses are incredibly high. The family is commuting in and out of Boston to see Ruben. They are facing unknown health insurance bills, medical bills, transportation and adaptive technology needs. They just don't know what the future needs will be for life and for work.
Ruben gives so much of his time volunteering for his town and its children. While the family is hopeful for the future, they really needs our support now. Please donate as much or as little as you can.
