Unfathomable!!
PLEASE pray for my brother Layne Gruenewald and his family in Southern California High Desert.
Yesterday on Mothers Day where mommies get to enjoy their children celebrating them my brother, wife, and family in California searched from 1am Sunday morning until evening on foot through the rocky hills for my sweet 24-year-old nephew….search and rescue helicopter found my sweet precious nephew where he had taken his life.
I can NEVER unhear the horrific agony and shredded grief my brother released when they found his sweet boy. “my boy Manda, my boy is gone!”
I would normally not share something SO sacred however its important to shed light on such bottomless agony and endless wells of unspeakable sorrow taking one's life brings to those dear to us.
Landon was a beautiful, humble, loving, God-fearing, kind, and big-hearted soul. Dedicated to his family and friends, at 24 years old had the world by the tail! His decision to take his life this past Sunday (Mothers’ Day) has devastated everyone!!!. Everyone is completely stunned and is left dumbfounded….not everyone shows or shares their burdened heart. Not a single one has said there were signs.
No one in our family realized that behind Landon’s big smile was so much pain, and it is this haunting thought that will forever remain a question for us all. He was hardworking, caring, kind, and always had a smile that was so gentle; he touched the lives of many, and to lose him in such a way is an absolute shock and tragedy that will haunt us all forever.
Through this page, we not only want to support Layne and Shelly Gruenewald (Landon’s parents), but bring light to the suicide epidemic. Such a permanent decision often made because of a temporary problem has lifelong devastating outcomes that ripple across our society. The pain of the daily impact of Landon’s loss is so real, the countless unanswered questions, and the acceptance that our lives will be lived without Landon forever is something Layne and Shelly and our family will feel forever.
His friendship and joy spread across the Dallas, Highland Park HS/Park Cities community, and the Riverside Prep / Victorville, Ca. community. As Landon’s good friend, David McCullough so eloquently stated, “Landon did not have a single instinct for meanness or ugliness. It was rare to catch him without a smile or overtaken with laughter. His calm and loving presence encouraged you to rest easy and simply have a good time. Landon was an extremely loyal friend in the truest sense and will be dearly missed.”
We would so appreciate if you could share this page with the hope that Landon’s story is met with compassion, understanding, and abundant generosity. We would also like to draw light to the issue of suicide and hope that this page reaches someone who may be feeling like there is no hope and we would like to let you know that there is. Suicide is a permanent solution to an often temporary problem and your life has so much value and purpose so we encourage you to speak to someone who can help you navigate your journey. There is hope…. We promise. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-8255. We are raising a goal of $18,000 for funeral costs for the Layne Gruenewald family.
