It was late August when Rex first noticed a lump in his neck. It had only been there for 1-2 weeks when he decided to visit his doctor. The doctor was not too concerned and thought it was likely viral but sent him to a specialist anyway. After visiting the ENT specialist there was a long 2-3 week wait. After a few different tests the call was received… A CANCEROUS TUMOR. The word no one wants to hear. This shocked us all… even the referring doctor was shocked.
From this point the plans began for how to attack this. Surgeons were involved, and much research was done by Rex and Maritza. There is so much to learn about how to treat cancer and one ever really considers this until it happens to you. Well, after many weeks of research and doctor visits this is what they decided… they wanted to avoid surgery and radiation. Rex and Maritza considered this option a lot, but after speaking to many people and patients, and learning about the possible side-effects of neck surgery and radiation in the neck - which include permanent nerve damage, voice box damage, possible loss of saliva/ taste, difficulty swallowing, shoulder and arm movement issues, potential loss of feeling in arm resulting in potential amputation - they felt prompted to seek other treatment options.
Rex and Maritza are making every attempt to understand this disease and how to handle what may have caused the cancer to form in the first place. They also want to cure the cause as well as the cancer itself to have the best chance for a complete recovery.
So, after many visits to several different treatment facilities, including a visit to a treatment center in Mexico, they decided to seek treatment at the Cancer Center for Healing in Irvine. They were referred to this Cancer Center by a friend of Rex’s parents who has successfully been receiving treatments there for a terminal cancer for the past 14 years.
In early November Rex began his daily, weekly visits to this treatment center and has been undergoing IV therapy which includes a mild dose of liquid chemo. These IV treatments along with other supplements and diet changes have been their method of treatment over the past 5 weeks.
I am happy to report that THESE TREATMENTS ARE WORKING! The tumor is shrinking! The doctors at this center are pleased with his progress but he is not finished yet.
This has been an emotional and financial journey for Rex and Maritza. Since we cannot help them medically, I wanted to reach out to see if we can help them financially. It’s unfortunate that although there are several options out there for cancer treatment, insurances typically only cover one option. And that option may not always the best option for the patient. In this case they chose a different route that has been working and offers very little side effects.
I am asking their close friends and family to consider helping them out financially. This goal will help cover the next phase of his treatment and only covers about ½ of what they’ve had to pay out of pocket thus far.
This has been a tremendous burden for them that I would love for us to help lighten – at least in this way. Please consider donating something, even a small amount, to help cover the cost of his next phase of his treatment. And also, PLEASE KEEP PRAYING FOR REX!
