“one day you will tell the story of how you overcame what you went through and it will be someone else’s survival guide” -unknown
My name is Haylee Polak, this fundraiser has been established for my 19 year old brother, Aaron Vrbka, as he begins his fight to beat cancer!
Two weeks ago, Aaron Vrbka was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma after noticing lumps in his neck. As you can imagine, this was a major shock to both him and our family. Aaron had his first round of Chemotherapy on Thursday. After the first 4 rounds, they will do another PET scan to see how the cancer and his lymph nodes are responding to the treatment, and he will continue in the fight forward to beating this terrible disease.

Anyone that knows Aaron knows how special of a person he is. For those of you who may not, we know you would love Aaron just as much as so many of us do! He is the light of our community in so many ways. Aaron is one of the kindest, most positive, caring, enthusiastic, pure souls. He lives every day in the Image of God, and shines that light upon everyone he meets. Aaron has been an active member at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Parish. This year he also became an Eagle Scout. Aaron enjoys theater, musicals, poetry, nature, traveling, and hanging out with his friends like any 19 year old. Aaron is a loving son, brother, and uncle in our family. In more ways than I can put into words, Aaron is the glue that holds our family together and we take so much pride in watching him navigate this crazy world!
Aaron graduated high school from Lincoln Pius X in Lincoln Nebraska this August. He just moved into his dorm to start his freshman year at the University Of Nebraska. In his short first weeks of campus life Aaron immersed himself into joining the catholic fraternity Phi Kappa Theta. He is a part of the Communications Committee for the Association of students at the University of Nebraska. He will be participating for the UNL Speech team. Aaron is a regular at the University’s Newman Center and St. Thomas Aquinas church where he started teaching for the bible study group “All In” for parishes around Lincoln. He will also be teaching 5th grade CCD at Cathedral Parish.
Hearing how excited my brother was to start life on campus, meet new people, and plant new roots at the university breaks my heart. In the midst of a pandemic there are so many unknowns and now he must begin this fight for his life. Our family has already felt tremendous love and support from friends and family in these early days of fear and shock. We know that with this, if anyone is going to face this disease head on and beat it, it's going to be Aaron!
I am setting up this fundraiser to help ease the burden on my family, so that my parents don't have to worry about whether or not they can take off work to be there to support my brother. For those that know my parents Lyle and Joyce, you know that they are incredibly giving to their community as well as other communities when it comes to dedicating their time, love, and energy for anyone in need. They often place helping others above their own needs. As our family navigates Aaron's brave fight to beat cancer, let's help lift them during a time when they need to be focusing on their son instead of worrying about the day to day financial pressure of my brother's critical care.

We know that so many have been affected by our current economic state and may not be able to donate. If that is the case, we ask to help us lift Aaron up with prayers as he navigates this new path in his life!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
